New Jersey Nets…Always a Strong Contender

In 1977, the team that had already been known as the New Jersey Americans and the New York Nets became known as the New Jersey Nets when they moved the team from New York after becoming part of the NBA as part of the NBA/ABA merger. As part of the ABA, the team managed one division title and two championships. Since joining the NBA, they have made it to the playoffs 16 times, winning their division four times and taking home two conference championships.

Currently, the owners of the New Jersey Nets are working towards a relocation of the team from their current home at the Izod Center to the Barclay Center in Brooklyn. So far, the move has been blocked by various legal battles and environmental concerns at the new site, but the team has plans now to relocate by the year 2012.

Off the court, the community has benefited greatly from having the team there. The New Jersey Nets are active in programs that support the area underprivileged. They donate tickets, time, and money to various programs supporting area youth, as well as provide recognition for outstanding achievers.

The Nets Foundation is focused on youth and improving their chances for a brighter future and better quality of life. They promote an active lifestyle through basketball programs, as well as encourage good citizenship. Aside from the Nets Foundation, several of the players also have their own private foundations to support various causes.

Entertainment at the New Jersey Nets games is of course spectacular. From the Nets Dancers and Team Hype, to the NETSational Seniors and the Nets Kids, the dance teams provide varied entertainment sure to please audiences of all ages. Of course, no game would be complete without the team’s Mascot, Sly.

Everyone loves a good rivalry right? Well the Nets are not having any shortage in that department. Their biggest rivals are the New York Knicks for several reasons. First, the Knicks are located in close proximity to the team and often seem to get more publicity and praise, no matter how well the Nets are doing.

A larger reason for the rivalry is probably the fact that the team caused the Nets to lose one of their star players when the team became part of the NBA. Because of their location at the time of the merger, the NBA considered the Nets to be encroaching on the Knicks territory, and fined them 4.8 million dollars, preventing the team from increasing the salary of Julius Erving, who then refused to play for the team any longer and went to the Philadelphia 76ers.

As a result, the team lost the season with a franchise worst record. Other events between the two teams served only to increase the tension and to this day, games played between the two teams are filled with booing fans because of how easy it is for each team’s fans to get to the other’s arena for games.

Fierce rivalries, amazing entertainment, and great basketball. A New Jersey Nets game has everything a fan could hope for and more. This is one show you’re sure to remember for years to come.
